Why Accessible Washrooms Matter?

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) aims to create a barrier-free Ontario by 2 2025. Accessible washrooms are a crucial aspect of this initiative. People with disabilities deserve dignity and independence when using public facilities.

Recent Amendments to the Building Code (Effective January 1, 2015):

  • Focus on New Construction and Renovations: Primarily applies to newly built spaces and existing structures undergoing significant renovations.
  • Barrier-Free Path of Travel:Includes requirements for:
    • Power-operated doors at main and vestibule entrances.
    • Wider doorways, designated passing space in hallways, and specific curb ramp dimensions.
  • Access to All Floors: Elevators are now mandatory in buildings to provide access to all levels.  (Exception: Restaurants with amenities on every floor are exempt from providing elevator access to upper floors.
  • Visual Fire Safety Devices:  Visual fire alarms are now required in various areas, including all accessible and universal washrooms.
  • Washroom Updates:
    • Requirements for public door operators in accessible washrooms.
    • Specific mounting heights and locations for washroom accessories (soap dispensers, grab bars, etc.).
    • New fold-down grab bar options for transfer space on both sides of the toilet.
    • Mandatory L-shaped grab bars in all accessible washrooms.
    • Increased minimum clear floor space.

Accessibility Beyond Building Codes

While the Building Code outlines essential guidelines, creating a truly inclusive environment goes beyond these regulations. Here are additional considerations:

  • Friendly and Supportive Staff: A welcoming and helpful staff willing to find solutions can make a significant difference.
  • Flexible Seating: Removable chairs allow for easier maneuvering compared to fixed booths.
  • Individual or Unisex Washrooms: Provide greater privacy and ease of use.
  • Outward Swinging Doors: Ideal for easier entry and exit. Inward-swinging doors require additional clearance space.
  • Minimum Clear Floor Space: A minimum of 72 inches x 72 inches (1.8 meters x 1.8 meters) allows for maneuvering a wheelchair.
  • Doorway Width: A minimum width of 35 inches (89 centimeters) is required to accommodate wheelchairs.
  • Automatic Features: Automatic door openers, flush valves, soap dispensers, and paper towel dispensers are ideal for ease of use. Controls should be mounted no higher than 47 inches (119 centimeters) from the ground.
  • Lowered Shelves and Hooks: Hang hooks and shelves at a maximum height of 47 inches (119 centimeters) for easy reach.
  • Grab Bars: Install L-shaped grab bars beside the toilet and a horizontal grab bar on the back wall for support during transfers.
